Paul Thurlby’s penguins line the walls of the Evelina's Renal Department, bringing humour as they waddle, wade, dive and play around the place.
From a distance, a group of penguins clusters together against angular blue & white backgrounds, implying ice sheets and seas that span the shared spaces, inviting exploration around the department during waiting times.
"The feedback has been really positive from both children and young people and their families. They have said they wish they could spend time in the waiting area to enjoy the penguins more. [...] the artwork gives the area a colourful and fun feeling but it’s not too overpowering."

Look closer and you’ll see a whole colony of characters – young ones, skateboarding teens, doctor penguins, fishing enthusiasts – a diversity that reflects the demography of the service community.
Our approach creates an impact using modest resources: we’ve combined large, bold colour fields in contrast with smaller artworks, bringing rich enticing imagery and narratives to life using minimal manufacturing.
