The NGS Macmillan Unit features artworks by a selection of artists and designers, curated by Art in Site, who worked closely with the buildings architects, The Manser Practice, in consultation with staff and patients.
Artist Rebecca Salter created a decorative motif for the building. An ink drawing on paper which was separated into strips.
This pattern is hand painted onto walls behind the reception desks in silver leaf brush strokes. It also features on wayfinding signs, and on the organic cotton blankets provided to patients when receiving treatment.
Rebecca Salter took colours from the surrounding countryside, weaving them into a framed hanging textile. This artwork acts as a privacy screen dividing the waiting area from the clinical corridors, and was hand-made from recycled materials on a traditional loom.
The coloured blocks from the screen were further developed by Art in Site through a set of geometric colours and forms, which appear on the ash cupboards, wall panels and glazing.
“I am speechless and blown away; this has far outreached all of my expectations and I just feel delighted.”

Drawings of flowers with a four seasons’ border of the Derbyshire dales, by Artist David Jones, hang in quiet spaces and consulting rooms, bringing a touch of the hand-drawn and natural into the medical environment.
