This project marked an important milestone for our team: the successful expansion of our work beyond Europe, into Japan.

We were approached by Mr. Oyama to transform a children and family clinic in Yokohama City. After two years working as a clinician at Evelina London, Mr. Oyama wanted to bring the success of Kiriko Kubo's Evelina Gang to Japan.

Pioneered by Art in Site for Evelina London, the gang is a set of manga illustrations of children used on an architectural scale, to give information, guide the way and help real life children feel welcome and safe.

"Since our opening, patients say the atmosphere is softer and warmer as a result of the art. I myself find it very healing, and after the clinic hours, I often sit on the bench in the waiting room and look at Kiriko Kubo's hospital art."
Director of Oyama Children's Clinic, Mr Oyama (translated from Japanese)

Kiriko's characters represent a range of ages and personalities, Shizuku (3), Kana (5), Kuuya (7), Fuuta (9), Hiromi (10), and Moro (12). All their names linked to the departments theme, 'forest'.

We developed the colour scheme to work alongside the materials and fabrics already in the department, and positioned the children at different points, peeking around corners, pointing out directions, and waving.

The result was a unique identity for the clinic while retaining Kiriko's celebrated storytelling, which has been so familiar to many generations of children in Japan.

By working closely with Mr. Oyama and Kiriko, we demonstrated the adaptability and universality of our approach to human-centered design, ability to set trends and proven success.
